 A fisherman in the Gulf of California has made scientific history by catching an albino fetal shark with one eye.

Live Science reports that the Cyclops shark was sliced from the belly of a pregnant Dusky shark earlier this summer.

Shark researchers have examined the preserved creature and found that its single eye is made of functional optical tissue.

News of the one-eyed shark went viral earlier this summer after Pisces Fleet Sportfishing, owned by the Pisces Group Cabo, posted photos of the odd-looking animal on their blog.

Live Science reports that the malformed creature would probably not have survived outside the womb.

The fisherman who caught the Cyclops shark is planning to hang on to the preserved remains.

(I keep the possibility open that this is a hoax, if not…whoa!)
